Why a Snail?

A snail is a strange thing to put on an AI product. We chose it on purpose.

Speed is the easy thing to sell. We’re after something harder: the quality of the work, and the professional standard it answers to. The lookup that used to eat twenty to forty minutes is done in about five seconds — but that’s efficiency, not speed: the drudgery removed, never the judgment. What’s left is the part that has to be right. That is what the snail is for: a different relationship to slowness, a shell it never sets down, and a trail others can follow.

SLOW

We’re naming the opposite — and we mean it as a promise, not an apology. Slow isn’t the clock. It’s the patience the work demands: the boundary that doesn’t get cut, the proxy disagreement that doesn’t get averaged away, the verifier’s question answered the first time. None of it can be skipped — and Cortex skips none of it. It does every step of that slow, careful work; what it removes is the waiting, not the rigor. The patience didn’t vanish — it moved off your calendar and into the machine.

The slowness is the quality. The waste is all that’s gone.

SHELL

That careful work is worth nothing if it arrives stripped of its reasoning — so a Cortex answer moves the way a snail moves, inside a shell it never leaves behind. A shell is two things at once: a structure you carry, and a body you keep sheltered. An answer is built the same way. The structure travels with the number — every figure carries its dataset, version, and proxy note inline, pulled from the record, not narrated by the model. A number that arrives without them has not, in any defensible sense, arrived. And the soft part stays covered: the raw activity data behind a result — supplier inputs, confidential inventories — never has to leave the shell. What must be shown is shown; what must stay private stays inside.

The shell is the answer’s accountability and its protection — never its packaging.

TRAIL

A shell makes one answer stand on its own; a trail makes the whole path retraceable. The trail is the part of the snail others get to see — the mark it leaves as it goes. In this work, that mark has a proper name: a footprint. And a footprint is never more trustworthy than the path that leads back to it. The path won’t fix a bad assumption — it just lets the right person catch one. So Cortex leaves the path, not just the number — followable in either direction, back to source, without rebuilding it from scratch. Access stays scoped to those entitled to the work — your verifier, the colleague who inherits the project next quarter, your future self defending a 2024 filing in 2027 — and closed to everyone else. Never opaque where it counts.

The trail outlives the conversation. That is the design intent.
